I don't think that he was hit by shrapnel, but I wasn't there...so...can't say for sure.
If it were me, I'd be so scared that any little thing would spook me. Insect, ricocheting brass, etc.

A bullet impacted the armor near him. The huge amount energy released is what he felt. I don't think that he was hit with anything but not knowing the feeling is enough to scare anyone into thinking they are hit the first time they have that experience. When a bullet impacts near you it is a feeling that you have never felt before so the first time it can be confusing if you are actually hit.

@TheEvilDead Not entirely, a lot of soldiers get scared and cower away when they get that close to death/danger (when they're new).
The instinct to go to your training happens when you've trained yourself to overcome the fear and urge to take cover and live.

I'm going to say a few things here and before anyone accuses me of not knowing or whatever I was over in Afghanistan for some time so I have experience.
I don't think this was shrapnel. No explosion or anything. Shrapnel will pierce skin. The force of even the smallest explosions is enough to penetrate skin. I along with several buddies have taken shrapnel, some worse than others- I was lucky, and I can say this from first hand experience. Not to mention the angle he was positioned. You a More..

@crazyhorse357 It could have been a rock or even a dirt clod. With no blood it definitely wasn't shrapnel. No obvious explosion so it's not likely. A round once hit very close to me and sent a rock into my face. With the adrenaline you have no idea. As funny as this may sound it could have also been a bite or sting from some insect. It's happened before.
