House is pretty much write off if flames are already coming out of the windows. Come to think of it, unless firebrigade gets to target in less than 5 minutes and nobody didn't even try to put it out, then damage is quite extensive (if there was a fire, not just smoke). So self help does pay, specialy if you live in rural area far away from local firehouse.
Other possible reasons for a break are frosen hoses and lack of water. Former is obiviously result of later as hoses freeze when water is More..

not a firefighter - but I would guess if a structure is already a complete loss (like this one) all you can do is contain it and let the structure burn to the ground.

Looks like a training excesses. They are burning it down an abandon house so some new guys can get practice spraying water on a big fire. They do this everywhere.
