TACHIRA, Venezuela - November 20, 2007 - A Venezuelan lawmaker from President Hugo Chavez's party on Tuesday repeatedly hit a local television journalist after a violent row, in which she accused the journalist of "having offended" her deceased son.
The incident took place at TRT studios in the city of Tachira in Venezuela where the lawmaker had participated as a guest in a debate.
According to witnesses, the assaulted journalist was about to start his daily programme when the lawmaker Iris Varela attacked him and began to destroy the studio's furniture.
Security personnel from the television station tried to stop Varela but her four bodyguards stopped them.
Varela claimed that the journalist Gustavo Azocar had defamed her, her family and her dead son in a book he published last July.
She said she wanted to participate on his show to reply to his story. She did not elaborate on what was written on the book.
The television station decided to go live and show the row to its audience.
