I've seen a dog retrieve a rock from the bottom of a muddy river. Over and over. How he found that particular rock each and every time I have no idea. The river was at least 8-10 feet deep and thoroughly silty. It seemed not to matter how far out it was thrown.
It sometimes took him awhile, and many repeated dives.
The dog was an utterly obsessed black retriever.
