Crude Macgyver-style camera timer used to make a time-lapse video.
Decided to do a time lapse movie of this storm last minute (day of the storm). By then it was too late to order a timer release and the stores closed early. But I was determined to capture it somehow...
Tried several things: started out with an analog circuit using my old Radio Shack 160-in-One electronics kit. There was some success, but I couldn't get the circuit to repeat itself. I then investigated serial or USB output from a PC but abandoned that plan. Didn't think about a camera firmware hack, but I probably wouldn't have risked bricking my old trusty 20D.
I decided on this water timer, thinking it would be fun to do and get the job done. It took me longer than expected. I originally had a fixed popsicle stick striking the button on the cable release (you can see it on the side of the lever), but could not generate enough force with the falling water container to mash the button hard enough. So I used the mercury switch idea from a past project. It was cool when it finally started working and I could get some sleep.
