The Comal County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that preliminary autopsy results confirm Mark Anthony Spencer, 53, fatally shot his wife, Arden Specia-Spencer, 52, then committed suicide at their home in northern Comal County.

The San Antonio couple had separated and were going through a divorce. Specia-Spencer had been at the couple's ranch house in the 2900 block of Purgatory Road on Sunday with the couple's sons and her mother.

All four were outside around 5 p.m. when Spencer arrived, Comal County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Reynolds said.

Spencer, a San Antonio real estate broker, spoke calmly to his wife, a prominent attorney, officials said.

“There wasn't an argument or anything else,” Reynolds said. “There was some conversation exchanged, but I don't think it was unpleasant.”

Then, as Mary Specia — Specia-Spencer's mother — watched, Spencer pulled out a handgun and shot his wife in the head. He then shot and killed himself, Reynolds said.

The pair had been married 13 years. Specia-Spencer filed for divorce in January, and the contentious proceedings had not been finalized, authorities said.

The couple had been sharing custody of the boys, ages 9 and 10, and Reynolds said Spencer knew it was his wife's weekend to stay at the ranch house with the children.

A rosary will be said for Specia-Spencer at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3303 Urban Crest Drive, at 7:45 p.m. Sunday. A funeral service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Monday, also at St. Pius.

Services for Spencer are pending.
