I would rank them as the most sacrificing, the german paratroopers, especially those at operation Brest were probably the best.

  • Both of your selections are "the best of the worst",
because they both lost the war. Next please.

Primarily due to numbers. Say what you will about the Germans, before we dismantled their military they had some pretty disciplined well trained soldiers and officers. Now they're fat and lazy.

  • Didn't realise there was a Jap regiment in the US Army, strange considering Japanese Americans were considered 'Hostile Aliens' and placed in internment camps...

Americans won only through having an absolute superiority over the enemy.

In equal conditions the US would have lost all the battles.

    What was this "Operation Brest"?

I can't say the Soviet soldiers were less sacrifying than the Japanese soldiers.

And the USSR was the first country to have paratroopers.

Soviets also trained them better than anything other country during the 30s.

Sorry i meant the Battle of crete.

Perhaps USSR had the first paratroopers, i never questionen who did. From what i know, the German paras were the first to be used in large scale though. And their equipment and armament made them far more versatile, which can easily be backed up by their legendary status and chalked up victories.

The soviet soldiers were more often than not more scared of their commisars than the Germans. At any rate there were countless of cases where the Russians fled, very few if any instances were the Japanese did the same without orders. The soviets were bound by political oppression, the Japanese on the other hand. Had a culture that revolved around nothing but honour to their emperor, to them shame of defeat were something you couldnt live with.

Americans were hardly the best. The Germans stood up to all the major nations in a world conflict and held out for 6 long years, that is saying something. Im not undermining the Americans at all though, so don't missunderstand me. It's just that people always seem to look at victories as a deciding factor. If we entertain the thought of those 300 Spartans for instance, would you consider them to be good, and the persians as the best ?

As for the Japs in WW2, they fought with what they had, which were for the large part very outdated weapons. Can't really stand in awe of their arsenal.

Besides no matter which soldiers are the best, the deciding factor in wars lies with with leaderships and commanders. The Germans had equally as capable generals and commanders as the allies. But they weren't employed properly because of Hitlers vanities and distrust to the generals. The strategy amongst the Allies on the other hand worked frictionless between the leaders and military commanders. That made more difference than anything during that war, and most others i can think of. Battles can be won by detirmined soldiers who take inititive on their own, but it very seldom happens. Where battles are to be fought are decided by the top brass, in many cases locations have hampered many soldiers who had been superior if used in other areas. British soldiers were best in some regards, Americans in others, and Germans had their fields of expertise. Overall i would say the Germans were best, not because of any human capabilities over the rest. But mainly because of their superior equipment and armament, which when lessened in quality and manufacturing capabilites started to show in battle progressiveness.
