San Francisco Police Shoot and Kill a Teenager Over $2 Rail Fare (Video)

The video is from Saturday July 16, 2011. The incident occurred at around 4:45 pm on Third Street and Oakdale Avenue in San Francisco, California. According to SFPD, a 19 year old man was believed to have been in a possession of a firearm and was shot by officers on duty.

It all started with uniformed officers conducting a fare inspection on a municipal light rail train. The teenager whom they later shot dead was unabl

e to present a valid ticket and was detained. But as soon as they got off the platform, he took off.

The officers who pursued the teenager on foot said that he pulled out a gun and opened fire at them to which they responded with their service weapons.

Eye witnesses, however saw things go differently. They say they saw the teenager run and plant the ground after being shot.

Police maintained that the teenager had a weapon and searched the area for it but could not find it. They did find a casing which they said did not belong to the police officers and believed the victim may have thrown the gun away during the pursuit and someone may have taken it.

The teen was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was shot 5 times over a $2 bus fare. 2 Days after the shooting he was identified as Kenneth Harding. You can see him alive in the video but during those moments he could clearly feel his life was leaving him with each drop of blood he spilled on the sidewalk, but help did not come fast enough.

  • What a load: "He was shot 5 times over a $2 bus fare."
    The real story is here.

    Summary:
The guy's name is Kenneth Harding, he was wanted for questioning in another homicide investigation, he was stopped for a fare violation, then he ran from the cops, he then shot at the cops, and the coroner says the bullet that killed him, was his own.

"shot 5 times over a $2 bus fare" what More..

  • Stupid description. I remember this. The scene wasn't secured against monkey intrusion quickly enough. One of the bystanders picked up the weapon and left with it. The kid had GSR on his hands and casings found that weren't of any of the officers and the round that killed him was from the gun he was holding. Nice try Jesse J.

    • @weada
Funny how some people try to make it out to be something it isn't.

They didn't shoot him over two bucks. They shot him for him trying to kill them first.

If you try to kill a cop, you can bet your ass, which is what you are doing, he will shoot you; and rightfully so.

  • I think a more accurate title would be "Idiotic teen flees cops and then opens fire on them over minor incident. Thankfully, situation results in another dangerous, worthless moron being removed from our planet".

  • Yeah, but the bullet that killed him came from his own gun. According to the coroners report, a round from his gun struck him in the neck killing him.

  • This is old and another vid surfaced that showed the gun being picked up by an onlooker. This kid was a punk...he pulled a gun on a cop and got killed. Yawner.

  • "He was shot 5 times over a $2 bus fare."

No. He was chased "over a $2 bus fare." What happens from that point is a lot more serious than a $2 bus fare. I bet the cops did over react. In this day and age of people shooting and killing each other, including cops, over seemingly small things, I'd probably over react too.

We can't ask the perp why he was willing to die for $2 (Similarly, we can't ask Trayvon why he would hit and bash the head of somebody who was previously fol More..

  • Wasn't shot over a $2 fare, he was shot because they believed he pulled a gun. That is a reason to shoot him. Then all the other animals gather around the scene screaming, shouting, threatening, and more than likely picking up a gun that may have been laying there.

  • Don't pull guns on police, especially over a $2 fare ticket

  • So they didn't kill him over a $2 fare.. they shot him because he tried to shoot them.. please change the title, it's bullshit. "Try SFPD Cops shoot man AFTER $2 fare dispute" that sounds about the same, but more accurate.
