Romney: I Paid 13 Percent in Taxes.
Following furious demands from Democrats to release his tax returns, Mitt Romney offered the fullest explanation yet of his tax status Thursday, saying that he paid a tax rate of at least 13 percent of his income in each of the last 10 years. That’s a long way off from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s claim that an investor at Bain Capital told him that Romney paid nothing in taxes over the last decade. “I’m sure waiting for Harry to put up who it was that told him what he says they told him,” Romney said. “I don’t believe it for a minute, by the way.”

@kajidono I do ok.....
My main problem is single, no dependents, and I don't keep many reciepts tlto use for itemizing.
I give to charities every year too, just never remember to get a reciept.
kind of goes against the spirit of giving anyway..... asking for a reciept feels dirty lol.

@castanza128 Yeah. Itemizing doesn't do much good anyway because you have to total up more than the standard deduction, which they were nice enough to stealth raise, before you can start getting anything back.

@maxwellthebest Here's the difference: did you pay that on the money you had sitting in the bank, or did you pay that on the paycheck you got from your job? That's what they're talking about with the rate Romney pays. He's paying that on money he already has, not what he gets from work. That's why the rate is different.

@kajidono How do you know that? Willard won't release the "proof" that would put this all to rest. Don't you think he's tired of defending himself from these "baseless attacks"? Why wouldn't he release the proof if he has nothing to hide?

O.K., so we know that Romney has the ability to make lots of money... Why should that success be discredited? The real question is would Romney make a better president then the individual currently occupying The white house. Let us see: you have a very successful businessman, and former Governor of Massachusetts vs. an ineffective community organizer with the worst lack of leadership ability that I, at least, have ever seen in a president. I have worked with many Mormons, both growing up in Sa More..

@HuntGather Who says his success is being discredited? His own father set the president by releasing 10 years of tax returns. If he has nothing to hide, why the secrecy? You DO realize that Romney was born into a very wealthy family, don't you? As gov. of Mass. he was 47th in job creation. See Willard made his millions axing jobs, not creating them. He is responsible for Obamacare before it was called Obamacare though. The only difference between the plans is that Romney's plan coverts More..

And they claim the "job creators" need more tax breaks?
Here we have a person running for President claiming that.
Yet he(they) pays less than half of what 95% of us do?
Okey Dokey!

@Drenigma No, they claim, rightly, that we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world and that there's no real reason for it. Our tax rate is at 35% with dozens of goofy ass loopholes and bullshit that it takes a lawyer to read. Meanwhile Canada has lowered their tax rate to 16% and has been watching the business flood in.

Ok...point taken. So far all I have heard from Romney/Ryan is "more tax breaks for "job creators"". And tax everyone else. And everyone else pays over double what those "job creators" do!
Hell those "job creators" have had the biggest tax break in history since 2001 with Bush. We saw what happened then. Since Bush, conservatives have tried to pass more bills on womens reproductive rights than anything to "create jobs".

As for bill passing, if you look, the leftists had control of congress since 06, then had a super majority after the boy king was elected, and they didn't do much with it. The republicans couldn't get anything passed anyway so they pretty much quit More..

@Drenigma Fist off, almost half don't pay a dime in income taxes. Secondly the taxes Romney paid were capital gains taxes. It's return on investment he already paid higher rates on.

13% sounds about right considering he probably had investment loss carryovers after the 2008 stock market crash and none of his income was earned income but capital gains taxes. If a person has $1 million in earned income he will pay a lot of taxes. But if it is just capital gains taxes his tax rate will be low. But capital gains taxes are double taxation, so actually I don't believe capital gains should be taxed at all. But of course big spending politicians will not agree with me on this.

The US tax law taxes different types of income differently. All of those different tax laws are to control our activities by providing incentive for desirable activities and punishment for undesirable activities.
Three incomes are taxed less as an inducement to get people to invest in these directions.
1) Municipal bond interest is tax free.
2) Long-Term capital gains is taxed at 15%.
3) Qualified dividends are taxed at the capital gains rate of 15%.

You may want to go back and actually read my post rather than go off on nonsense. I consider Willard one of you lefty idiots being a pro-abort, pro gov't take over of healthcare Mass. liberal. I was explaining that certain types of income have lower rates and that obviously if anyone has a brain in his head he would gravitate to them. Buffet did. Sen.Kerry did. Clinton & Obama did. Lets take a minute to think about this.. If you were rich and business savvy, as Romney clearly is. Would you take advantage of every tax loophole and break possible to keep most of your money, donating a good portion to a cause you deem worthy?(i.e. the Mormon Church) Or would you trust the government to spend that money on bullshit programs that, more often than not, end up failing?

@kajidono What Warren Buffet says and does are two completely different things. You can give as much as you'd like to the government, anytime you wish. Have you ever thought that the obscenely rich people that say shit like "tax me more", is just to drum up support and/or to keep themselves from being demonized by the left?

@GolemtheGnome Fine, lets look at what Warren Buffet does. Runs his mouth about paying more taxes while not giving anything extra to the government and giving to charity instead. Because in his own words, the charity will do a much better job of using the money.
But they don't like that quote floating around so they do their best to bury it. He's never said that the government deserves more of anyone's money. He's saying the tax system in this country is all fucked up and needs to be fixed.
