(WTVC) - A recording just released by Chattanooga police, sheds new light on the death of a suicidal man.
Alonzo Heyward was killed more than two weeks ago when authorities say he pointed a gun at police.
There were three major developments Monday in a case that seems to have been stalled for weeks. The medical examiner reported Heyward suffered 43 gunshot wounds. Hours later, Chattanooga police department spokesperson Lieutenant Kim Noorbergen said that their investigation revealed the six officers involved in the shooting fired at least 59 rounds.
And then, there's the dash cam video from the car of Officer Lauren Bacha. Bacha was one of 6 officers who responded to 7th avenue more than two weeks ago on a report that a man was there, holding a rifle, threatening to commit suicide. That man is Alonzo Heyward.
Officer Bacha is wearing a wireless mic, and the sounds of what happened next, are on the recording.
Moments after Bacha's car stops, she gets out of the vehicle. Someone can be heard in the background telling police,"Before they shoot him right now... he's drunk, he's trying to killing himself."
Thirty seconds after someone gives the officers that ominous warning, you hear a pop, followed by screams, and then gunshots. There's a pause of 7 seconds, while people in the background continue to scream, but the shooting is far from over. More gunshots, then another pause, of about 7 seconds and then, even more shots.
According to the medical examiner's preliminary autopsy report released Monday, Heyward suffered 43 gunshot wounds. But those wounds include entrances, exits and re-entrances. Noorbergen says the police department's investigation into this case, is pending the full autopsy report from the medical examiner. The full report is expected to detail which wounds are entrances and which are exits, and provide a specific number or range of number of times Heyward was shot. The medical examiner said Monday that report could take weeks.
We found out about the video while interviewing Heyward's father, James Marine.
"I will ask the same question that my dying son asked, why are y'all shooting me," Marine says. "I will ask that question, I want that answer, for him. That's all i need to know. Why are y'all shooting me."
Marine hadn't seen the video yet, but he did know his son was killed by dozens of shots fired by 6 officers. Marine says, his family won't have justice and won't have closure, until the truth comes out.
"You got bad and you got good. So you can't blame the whole department for this, because the whole department wasn't standing right here," Marine says. "You have to deal with the individuals right here."
