At least five people have been killed by a gunman who opened fire on students at a university in the United States. The Valentine's Day killing spree took place during a geology class at the Northern Illinois University, west of Chicago. Witnesses said the gunman stepped onto a lecturer's stage and began firing before shooting himself dead. More than a dozen people were injured.
Said to be a former student, the man's identity has not been revealed. Early reports indicate he was armed with a shotgun and two handguns. Police say they still do not know the motive in what is the latest in a series of shootings at US colleges and high schools.
