@tat2d Every year we hear the horror stories of recovering a 4x4 the wrong way. But people, usually the newbies keep making the same mistakes. Even after being warned by more senior/experienced drivers in the group. All you can do is exclude them from group trip.

Yep, NEVER use steel. It becomes a lethal whip. Use a 6" nylon "snatch" strap. And don't get a 10' runnin' start!
Just bump it a little at a time, the nylon strap will stretch like a rubber band and it will nudge it out...........
The guy who got hit is probably the same dork who tied off to the bumper!
