Evolution is happening every day. Organisms have a wide range of genetic options that can be switched on or off depending on environment.
In the very short term this is the major evolutionary factor. In the long term random genetic variations can improve on the genetic repertoire available. None of these variations need be fatal nor even be expressed. Evolution simply relies on making a sufficient repertoire availabe so an organism can adapt to its environment.

They die miserably from diseases, violence, etc. Along with the pain the child suffers, this causes great distress and misery to their parents. This is completely ridiculous.
Mutations happen to all animals, if moths slowly changed colour to one more obvious than an other it would be picked off by predators. That is why one species of moth is different to an other. The colour is dependant on the habitat. The survivors carry on the gene that is the more successful.
