I heard the first tune on the BBC world service about 25 years ago. It's stuck in my mind ever since. The players were described as jannisaries.

the funny thing is when the ottomans invaded, nations kept there religion and culture and language. when the french invade its a genocide and there culture down people throats same goes for the English, Spanish, Russians etc. Janissary had nothing to do with Turks but had something to do with the ottomans. Ottoman history is really amazing, generals of all nationality soldiers of all nationality, stood for the ottomans. They save the jews who where murdered and killed by christian Europe. Amer More..

The once feared Great Ottoman Empire.

Led by Islam fighting the Infedels - nothing new here then.
Lets not fo'get this once mighty Islamist led Empire 'whopped our Christian butts' & more than once in its many conquests against us eh?
Is it only because we have the weapons technology against their numbers that we can hold them at bay today?

@whodat Didn't you delete half the comments in your pro-Turkish propaganda? Didn't you tell someone not to say anything if it wasn't nice? Did you not just say I must be uncultured and ignorant of History if I'm not familiar with your Turkish whoever band?

"Stone art works (reliefs) from as early as 3000 B.C. depict Assyrian and Babylonian musicians playing brass instruments while leading their armies in triumphal processions.
The Romans provide the first tangible evidence of organizational military musicians. Roman musicians, called aenatores, performed duties often required of military musicians today. They signaled troop movements, performed for offici More..

I guess that claim is right. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the Prussians learned from the turks how to march with music. They just added the goose step.
