Avon - Police are looking for thieves who crashed into a gun shop early Saturday morning.

The owners of Fort Liberty Firearms spent the day repairing their damaged storefront after the thieves broke through the building with an SUV. They say there are some weapons missing.

"They just floored it and ran right through the building," said owner Lisa Daugherty. "Everything was complete chaos, of course. They busted through the front windows."

The store's owners say it was no accident, the vehicle involved in the theft was stolen and crashed to steal more.

"They were here to rob us," said Daugherty.

Employees empty most of the gun cases daily, so the thieves didn't have much to steal.

"We lock up the majority of weapons at night when we close, so they were not able to obtain any handguns at all or assault weapons of any type," Daugherty said. "The only thing we have out is what you see as far as long guns."

The thieves took several hunting weapons and shotguns, but motion detectors alerted police when they were still outside the building planning their entry.

"At 3 a.m., there should be nobody out there," said Daugherty.

Daugherty says the store's surveillance video shows less than 30 seconds passed between the time of the crash and the officers' arrival, sending the thieves on the run. The shop is looking at more than $10,000 in damage, plus a lost business day during their busy holiday shopping season.

Stealing from a federally-licensed firearms dealer is a federal offense, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $250,000 or both.
