"American's are not British, so we shouldn't be speaking English" says a man we interviewed in a Pro-German rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. About 250 people took part in a Protest today, the protesters were mostly a member of the "American-German league", a Pro-German American cultural group dedicated in spreading German influence and culture throughout America. The protest was apparently about changing the official language used in the U.S from English into German. When interviewed, many of these German-Americans felt like they were mistreated throughout American history, and not enough credit was given to them for their contributions to America.
When we asked one Women who claimed German ancestry about why this protest was taking place, she said "Look, Most Americans are not of English ancestry, infact only 6% are, while ethnic Germans make up 50% of the American population, so why should we be speaking a language that was not only forced on us, but a language of a minroty?"
While another protester when asked the same question, said, "It's not about division, but about practicing the American constitution. America is supposed to be a federalist democratic country where everyone has the same freedom and equality, and most importantly freedom of speech, while we the majority can't even speak our own mother tounge, is this not hypocrisy? Our forefathers died so we could be free from the Anglo-saxon (English) rule and their oppression, what good would that be if we kept the language that was forced on the other European settlers?"
Pennsylvania alone has a high ethnic German-American communtiy, and the official Language was German until the 1950's.
The Germans in the U.s Make up over 50% of the European-American populace, while the Scottish and Irish stand at 20%, Italians at 15%, and English-Americans at 6%, the other 9% are mostly composed of ethnic Dutch, Greeks, Hungarians, Russians, and people of Swedish ancestry.
