IDF: Bil'in protester died of medical malpractice

Army probe into death of Jawaher Abu Rahma finds she overdosed on drug mistakenly administered at Ramallah hospital; tear gas not to blame.
Jawaher Abu Rahma, the woman who Palestinians claimed was killed in late December from IDF-fired tear gas during an anti-security barrier demonstration near Bilin, died as a result of the medical treatment she received at a Ramallah hospital, the IDF probe into the incident has concluded.

Abu Rahma, IDF sources said on Saturday, did not actively participate in the demonstration but was inside a house about 500 meters away from the site of the demonstration. She was however evacuated to a hospital in Ramallah sometime later in the day and after the demonstration where she was treated for an unclear ailment.

“According to our findings Abu Rahma died as a result of the medical treatment,” an source in the Central Command said on Wednesday.

Medical documents obtained by the IDF show that Abu Rahma received unusually high doses of Atropine, a medicine that is commonly used as an antidote to nerve agents such as nerve gas. Israeli gas mask kits used to be distributed to the public with shots of atropine inside.

According to the IDF’s findings Abu Rahma died of medical complications due to the medical treatment she received that was not connected to tear gas. The IDF has also uncovered documentation which hints to the possibility that Abu Rahma was sick with cancer and had been hospitalized several weeks before her death. ]

The IDF probe into the incident included an analysis of the demonstration and involved experts from the IDF Medical Corps who examined the medical documents that were received from the Palestinians.

  • Strange that yet again this comes from an 'unnamed source' within the IDF, no spokesman, no face, no trace, just quietly dropped out there in media-land.

However if its true, fair enough, you can see where the misunderstanding is if she was carried into an ambulance during the protest partic in a small village.
Perhaps unlike her cousin in 2008 who was killed by an IDF tear-gas canister(no argument from IDF) this girl just happened to the die the same day, and the PA got over excited...

    • Maybe that is the reason. They had mentioned the brother in the demonstration then somebody mentioned that she was sick and then they decided either to help her (and FUBAR caused some misscommunication between those who brought her to hospital and the medical personell) or they just decided that it would make realy nice media coup if she would "suddenly" die in the right day (this reminds me of certain bit in monty python movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jO1EOhGkY0 after 5:30).

    • a huge difference between "got over exited" and "decided to manufacture a story". i'm personally inclined to believe the latter.

    • The IDF is very much into the 'undisclosed source' It means no accountability and any old shit can be given out.

It works best with Israelis as they have this inate 'secret IDF business' concept. The leak is seen as 'including' them in State secrets and all need for proper scrutiuny is abandoned.

It's so funny seeing the IDF playing mind games on its own citizens!

    • Actualy that is "no accoutability to those they aren't accoutable" witch means that those they aren't accoutable can't use it against them. It doesn't mean that IDF isn't accoutable to their own they have sent their own to jail before if they have done something they weren't supposed to do but if forexample some soldier shoots somebody (anyone realy) because he/she thought that he/she had a reason to do so then so be it. No need to go public about it because it won't do any good. If so More..
