The long arm of the law received a helping hand this weekend when a top American cage fighter floored a suspected robber just hours before clinching the light-heavyweight title.
Jon 'Bones' Jones was about to begin meditating at the Great Falls Historic Park in Paterson, New Jersey, with coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn, when an old woman started screaming that robber had smashed her car window and stolen her sat nav.
The trio leapt up and sprinted after the suspect, but Jones' out-ran his trainers and in seconds the 6ft 4ins 205-pound fighter had floored the alleged thief.
Recalling the Saturday morning incident in a series of Twitter posts, the 23-year-old New York native said his coaches were concerned when he began to pursue the man when he was just hours from taking on Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua at the UFC fight in Newark.
The win makes him the youngest champion in UFC history.
He tweeted: 'Right away....Coach Wink goes after this guy. Without hesitation, Coach Jackson went after him...I was shocked and stood there for a second
'Then I threw my phone down and went with my coaches. Before you know it, we're sprinting up a steep hill chasing after him.
'I turned the jets on....we caught the guy. We got the lady's gps back.
'Our driver took a picture of Coach Jackson and I subduing the (alleged) criminal...
'It feels so good to help others. It gives me power and energy.'
Jones said the robber tripped over his own foot and he leapt on him wrestling him to the ground.
Jones told a post-fight press conference: 'I got so scared because I didn't know what I was going to do when I caught him. So I actually started barking like 'Aargh, I'm going to get you, argh.''
Jones said the man tried to stand up but he kicked his leg out.
He said: 'So he's down on the floor and I'm thinking like I hope I don't get stabbed right now. I'm just looking at him like should I ground and pound him? And Greg Jackson just comes out of nowhere and jumps on the guy's back and starts speaking Spanish.'
The trio held on to the man until the boys in blue arrived, but Jones admitted being concerned about what he had got himself into.
He said: 'Then a guy walked up to us and he's like 'Yo man, that could have been my mamma's car.' And once he said that I was like 'Yes, they're on our side.'
'The policeman got out of his car and was like, ‘What are you doing here? Aren’t you fighting tonight?’' Jones said. 'I’m like, ‘Yeah man, I’m trying to get my meditation, though.’'
'I just felt really good after that,' Jones said, 'and was like, ‘I’ve got to win this fight. I’ve got hard work, dedication and now I’ve got karma on my side.’'
