Tel Aviv is not ready for missile strikes

Despite threat of war with Syria and Iran, city shelters can only contain tenth of population.

Does Tel Aviv offer it's citizens sufficient protection from a possible ballistic missile strike? A review of security measures conducted in light of the looming threat of a confrontation with Syria and Iran has yielded disconcerting findings.

While an Iron Dome battery has recently been installed in central Israel for training purposes, the missile defense system does not offer protection against ballistic missiles. Moreover, shelters in Tel Aviv can only house a tenth of the population, Ynet has learned.

Tel Aviv residents and employees could seek cover in the fortified sections in their homes and offices; those who don't have the luxury and don't make it into their neighborhood shelter during an attack could be out of luck. A source in Home Front Command said that new shelters are no longer being built, and the authorities are not taking sufficient measures to fortify existing homes.

The authorities have launched an effort to map out the city's shelters, but it remains unclear when the project is set to be completed.

City Councilman Shlomo Maslawi noted that the situation is worse in Tel Aviv's southern neighborhoods, where many refugees have taken residence.

On the upside, the existing shelters are well maintained, the city's schools are fortified and emergency services hold frequent drills to practice wartime scenarios. The Municipality said that over the past few years it has invested NIS 10 million (roughly $2.5 million) in readying the city's protected areas for an emergency.

"Many of the shelters have been upgraded in accordance with the Home Front Command's standards… The city has 241 public shelters, including 111 which are equipped with air filtering systems designed to deal with chemical weapons," the Municipality said in a statement.

The shelters and fortified areas that have been installed in all the city's schools may also be used by residents.

  • Most people don't need to use public shelters. We all have our own. Bring it on, Iran.

  • If Israel does attack Iran, Iranians have every right to defend themselves and send missiles. Anyone disagreeing, is a douche.

  • Considering the fact that Hezbhoola alone has about 6000 missiles aimed at Tel Aviv, not to mention the tens of thousands of missiles launched from Syria or Iran, Tel Aviv is really living in a buble of sunny beaches and parties...

Actually business in Tel Aviv are very very hot, including huge real estate projects (including Jews from abroad which buys apartments as investments).

Seems ppl over here are denying the fact that everything can be turned up side down in a matter of days, if things will get messy with Syria or Iran.

TA is right now the city with most missiles pointed at, in the entire world, it seems...

  • Who cares, 1/10 of the population is more than what any other country could shelter. It should be up to the people to make shelters, not the government.

    • @funkyyaya Because a bunker near your house is better than one in a city center. Make it your own. The public ones are only meant for people who are out and about to take cover, not for people to leave their house or neighborhood in search of shelter.

I didn't make this illustration, but it represent a major fear in the Israeli public.

You can argue with it, but you can't say it's baseless, considering the fact other major cities in Israel (Beer Sheva,Ashkelon,Ashdod) became a routine target of missile strikes from Gaza, only AFTER Israel left the Gaza strip.

The first hills of the West Bank can be well seen from all over Tel Aviv metropolis, and from the high hills of the WB it is quite easy to watch all of central Israel.

    • @aydeo I was quoting you not the illustration.

Implying that Hamas would keep targeting israel after the creation of a palestianian state is something else.

    • @Othman

That is what the Illustration implies, not me (notice the green Hamas flags over the WB town in the photo).

You should already know I'm in favor of the Palestinians get what they desire, but I also can't deny the fear of Israelis from the Gaza strip scenario over the West Bank.

Don't worry, I speak with radicals in Israeli political forums the same I speak here with anti-Israel/Jewish.

For me they are both the same.

  • i spend 3 weeks in an underground buncker when i was in the army. they are everywhere in switzerland and the vast majority of the population could be safe for months underground. however i would rather die than spend the rest of my life in a bunker with my stupid neighbours sleeping with 10people in 10square meters...
