Seven dead, 20 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood, 'gunman on loose'
DEVELOPING: AT least seven people have been killed and 20 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, by men in military uniforms.
An Army spokesman at the Pentagon says the shootings began early afternoon Texas time at a personnel and medical processing centre at Fort Hood.
The spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Banks, says two gunmen were apparently involved. There is no word yet on who th
More..ey were, nor on identities of the dead.
Banks says the second incident took place at a theatre on the sprawling base.
KCEN-TV reproted that one person is in custody while there are unconfirmed reports that one of the gunmen is surrounded by police in the 42006 building on Fort Hood.
"There was a shooting on Fort Hood. Right now the MPs and civilian police have taken control of the situation," Fort Hood spokesman John Miller told the San Antonio Express-News. "The post is on lockdown. No one in or out," Miller could offer no other details.
The post and two nearby schools were reportedly on lockdown, NBC News reported. It was not known whether the victims are civilians or soldiers.
One gunman was in custody and another was on the loose. Carroll Smith, spokeswoman for the Killeen Police Department, said the post had not asked the local police for help.
"We have offered our assistance at Fort Hood. They don't need our help at this time," Smith said. "We're ready to help if they need us."
He says it is too soon to tell whether there is any link to battle stress or repeated deployments.
The Army is suffering a record high suicide rate and other signs of stress from fighting two wars.
