Because Americans know what socialism is.
Pffft, they hardly ever leave their country so understanding how the world works is a far cry for most in the USA. When 'socialism' becomes one of the extreme rights new favourite words you have to wonder if they even know the words that are coming out of their mouths. I have no doubt they believe so.
