@BenedictSassoon
The MP-40 wasn't superior to a Thompson. That would be like comparing a Sherman tank to a German Tiger tank.

A lot of Americans died to liberate your sewer of a country from 'non ignorant' Nazis, so you sir, can go smoke some more dope, stick your finger in a dyke, and shut the fuck up.

Can anyone explain to me why the grease gun was made in the first place?
Cost savings perhaps?

@blandadrops
The Thompson was an extremely robust, well made weapon. I heard it was laboriously hand crafted and cost the government about $300 a pop back then. The grease gun could be stamped out in minutes and cost about $17 to make.

@blandadrops
The Thompson was made of machined steel parts, if I recall right. More expensive to make and comparatively heavy. The M3 was virtually all stamped parts, was cheaper and faster to build and an easier carry.
The M3 lasted much longer in inventory, too. Was in official use right up to the '91 Gulf War by Air Force security personnel.

I was told by the tankers that it was easier to get it outside the tank.

@mutterfudder No, tankers prefer water cooled Vickers machine guns welded to their tripods.
