The reason we have such a brilliant system is because we are not run by religion based politics, yes we have our oil but we dont use it. Still we have this high standards. Americans have a lot to learn.

  • Norway can do this because it has a population of fewer than 5 million people with the largest per capita production of oil and natural gas outside of the Middle East. It's the fifth largest oil exporter and third largest gas exporter in the world. Oil and gas make up about half of the country's total exports and account for about 20 percent of the GDP. And the entire country has a smaller population than that of metropolitan Houston.

    • @fishwagon Yes and the oil money is invested so as to make money in the long term for 99% of the Norwegian people. Unlike the USA were the money from it's national resources goes mostly to the top 10% with no long term investment. Welcome to the difference between thin (usa) and fat (norwegian) capitalism.

In 1980 when i was born, the population was about 4 million, now 30 years later it's bordering on 5 million. That is an increase of about a million, which is a mix of Norwegian population growth and immigration. I don't think we have anything to worry about...

      20 years ago, immigrants made up ~4% of the population. Today they make up just a bit more than 13%. You do the math. When your native population is basically static and you allow immigrants who don't practice the same behavior with their reproductive habits, there is only one outcome and it is very predictable.

  • OK! Norway has 5million people to tend to. All of which have a similar language, ancestry/race, values and backgrounds. The US has 300M+ population with countless religions, cultures, classes, races, and political stances and idiots to go around. This makes things like health care and all the other BS a lot harder to get done here in the US. I hate it when people compare the USA to these small, perfect little Utopian countries like norway and sweden etc. it's apples and oranges people!

    Giving a fully paid holiday on an island may be rehabilitation but it's not punishment.

    • @DEADBEEF prison isn't about punishment but being denied your freedom to be part of a society. The problem with a prison system based on punishment is that it neither reforms the prisoner nor does it teach them anything but how to hate everyone even more.
