Lucky dog rescued from Hurricane Katrina 2005

I came across this photo a snapped in Louisiana of a man being reunited with his lost malamute in 2005.

While I was stationed on board the USS Shreveport, Norfolk, VA (strange coincidence), we conducted humanitarian efforts in New Orleans, LA from August 26 to September 22 2005. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend a few days working with PETA, The Humane Society and a lot of amazing volunteers from all over the country rescuing abandoned (*) animals. Most of the animals that were found alive, died within days of rescue(>90% died due to injury or were exposed to poisonous water).

Hundreds of people came to the shelter from Sep. 12-19 looking for their lost fuzzy friends. We only had 85 survivors.

I felt really bad taking this picture, but this was the only person I saw find their animal. He was the sole survivor of a pair of dogs, and I truly didn't think he was going to make it until his owner showed up.

I don't know their names, and I hope they don't mind me sharing this photo. Just wanted to post something positive today. Cheers ;c)
