Safe Mode: On
Snake bite = $143,000 hospital bill

"My jaw was dropping down," said Dag-Are Trydal, as he described his
reaction to the medical bill for treatment after he was bitten by a
rattlesnake.

Trydal's bill made headlines in Norway, where his
insurance provider was quoted as saying the charges from Scripps La
Jolla Hospital were the highest they had ever seen.

Trydal, an
exchange student studying cybernetics at UCSD, was walking to his car on
April 26 when he felt a sharp pain in his foot.

"I stepped two
steps back just immediately and I was seeing that a snake was sitting
right between my flip flops," he told 10News reporter Allison Ash. "I
was really scared, because I don't know much about the snakes here and
how dangerous they are,"

When a passerby told him Scripps Hospital was right across the street, he decided to walk there.

"As
I was walking over, my heart started thumping and I could feel a
tingling in my body and a metallic taste in my mouth," he said.

Trydal
was admitted to the hospital and given four doses of antivenom over a
24-hour period. He was thrilled that the treatment worked and he could
get back to his studies, until he heard from his insurance company.

That was when Trydal learned what his visit to the hospital cost: $143,989. He was shocked.

"I thought maybe $10,000," he said, noting that if he'd had the same treatment back home in Norway "it would have been free."

Trydal
agreed to let the hospital release a copy of the bill to 10News. In it
there are two separate charges for antivenin croatalidfab. The first
charge is for $102,440 and the second is for $25,610. That is a total of
$128,050.

"This is way too much, at least for a person that doesn't have good insurance," he said.

Trydal
admitted he was glad he bought an insurance policy to cover him during
his six months in the United States. When asked what would happen if he
had not, Trydal responded, "That would be very, very bad. I try not to
think about that."

    • @boofhead That's because snake bites are bigger issue in Australia. You have real deadly snakes. This man would have been fine going home and taking a nap.

    • @ST0N3PONY That's part of the issue, but it's also marked up a ton. If you own the market, you charge whatever you want.

    • @stra You seem to not understand the competitive nature of a capitalist system. When you "charge whatever you want", the person who does it better and cheaper gets the money instead.

    • @boofhead Look up CroFab antivenin. Not all vipers have teh same venom and in America CroFab now pretty much has a monopoly for pit viper bite treatment. In Australia with different snakes etc you will have different antivenins, probably traditional equine based ones.

  • Bullshit.

I was in a motorcycle accident in Australia and all i paid was 900 bucks. If I had done so back in the states, I would be in permanent perpetual debt.

  • Yup, big pharma fucks people, HARD.

    • @EmrysM Which big pharma company? This antivenin is made by a relatively small British pharma company. Their profit for 2011 was 9.2 million pounds.

The distributor Nycomed is pretty massive I guess.

    • @dorbie When I say big pharma I mean the U.S. medicinal market in general. Maybe other countries too but I don't look into them much. By the way, creating anti-venom doesn't require large numbers of employees or a lot of expensive equipment. All it requires is a bunch of snakes to milk venom from and just as many(give or take) animals to milk anti-bodies from.
It's not all that complicated once you know how to do it. You just slowly increase the dosage of venom you give to animals until they pro More..

    • @EmrysM CroFab manufacture is pretty sophisticated the way the fraction off the "venom-specific Fab fragments". Apparently this creates a very pure product that eliminates adverse reactions.

The whole business model of the manufacturer is to make targeted products that are used in critical life saving circumstances and charge a fortune for them. :-/

  • so............
if the bite does not kill you, the bill will give you a heart-attack...
and you better not survive that...
    something needs too change soon.

  • I'm sure he could have just gone back to Norway and shafted the hospital on the bill. But that is still an outrageous charge. Looks like I need to start selling anti-venom...

  • Australia - host of the ten most venemous snakes in the world charges $2000 per anti-venene ampoule.

I think this is going onto the PBS soon so they will drop to $33 or so.

    http://www.abc.net.au/rural/news/stories/s469559.htm

Of course being treated in a public hospital they are free. The $2K is only for private hospitals.

  • The American medical system has evolved into a machine for making money ONLY - patient care and community welfare are no longer a part of it's mandate. The country doctor has long ago been replaced by the incorporated MD Inc. In the long run, Obama will be considered a great President if can fix just this one greedy system.

    • @Nepean109 Yes, our for profit system is why you're able to enjoy cheap drugs, and it's why we're able to carry 3/4 of the global R&D spending. Maybe we should stop carrying the full load, and let you carry your own weight?

    • @ST0N3PONY

Australia is the world leader in anti-venene research and production. Full retail in Australia is $2K.

You American sleazebags buy anti-venene at wholesale from us and sell it on at 20,000% markup.

  • So I live in a 1st world country, i have good food , i have a good job and i pay about 35% in tax plus gst on evrey product i buy.

In other words im comfortable, now I dont have private health insurance. I go see my doctor it can cost me 10 - 20 dollars depending if its out of hours, but most of the time its nil. Meds from the chemist are expensive but not too much (and can be written of on tax if over 2k per year)
Ive been in hospital 3 times in the last 20 years here , and it cost a total of More..

  • He should have had a lawyer request a list of each charge cause hospitals charge insane amounts for cheap things. Some people have been billed 400$ for a toothbrush.
