As far as I'm aware a knockout is a concussion. It's comes from the Latin word 'concussio', which means 'to shake violently'.
The difference between a concussion and a knockout is that a concussion doesn't always result in loss of consciousness, like a knockdown for example. A concussion has more to do with the actual 'wires' that connect the brain to the brain stem.

@driz Has less to do with the muscles of the neck and more to do with the ramus of the mandible. All that shock goes to the jaw and is concentrated into the ramus sending a nasty little shock wave into the brain. Neck muscle and tendons actually damper the blow.

Punched in the jaw with your mouth open usually equals a broken jaw... also causes the condile protuberance of the lower jaw (where it hinges to the upper jaw) to be forced into the bundle of nerves that lay behind the mandible, causing a short circuit to the brain do to the intense pain.
Take your thumbs and apply pressure right behind the jaw, where it meets the bottom of your earlobe... the pain is even greater when you do it with your jaw slightly open.
