Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen said the rope saved the man's life by catching at the second story and softening the impact when the man reached the pavement below. His only injury was a broken little finger. Eyewitnesses said they heard screams and looked up to see the man plunging down the exterior of the Broadacres building in an alleyway near Second Avenue and Pine Street. Others saw the man fall as they looked out of their windows from offices inside the building. "He was going fast as he flew by when I saw him. And screaming. It was horrifying," said Tiffany Young, executive creative director of Smashing Ideas Inc., who works in an office inside the building. Robert Kleppen, who works in an office on the building's seventh floor, said he heard the man yelling and then he saw him falling. Kleppen said a portion of the man's body smashed through a seventh-floor window and then he bounced back outside the building as he continued his free-fall. "We saw a body come through the seventh-floor window, and then he continued to fall, and then we heard his stuff hit the ground," Kleppen said. "We thought he was dead." Kleppen said he and some co-workers ran outside to see if anyone else was in trouble. That's when they saw the window washer suspended about a foot above the brick pavement of the alleyway after his terrifying fall. "His hands and his legs actually hit the ground," Kleppen said, but the man's torso did not impact the pavement at full velocity, saving his life. Young said it was a horrifying experience - not just for the window washer who fell but for the people who saw it happen. "Completely traumatized several of our employees," she said. Tonight the dad is furious. TriMet tells us they are still trying to find out exactly what happened on board the northbound Green Line train, but what is certain, dad is not happy and says his emergency was ignored by the train operator. "I thought the doors were going to close on my arm, so I let him go," said the father, Aaron Bailey. In surveillance video you can see the 3-year-old, Aiden Bailey, left the Green Line train. "You're son's on one side of the train and you're on the inside and if that gal hadn't been there you can only imagine what would have happened," said Bailey. Aiden stayed with the stranger as his dad tried to get off the train and back onto the platform. "I could not get off that train, those doors would not open when I pushed that button repeatedly," Bailey added. Bailey admitted his son pushed the wheelchair ramp button. When pushed it is supposed to close the train doors, extend the wheelchair ramp, and then reopen the doors. But the doors never reopened for Aaron. "They can say it's a malfunction, but likely it's not, in my opinion," said Bailey. Bailey believes he was ignored by the train operator, even after he repeatedly pushed the emergency call box. "Of course it was ignored there was no answer on the other end, he did not take responsibility for his passengers," said Bailey. TriMet couldn't provide KOIN Local 6 many answers as to what happened, including whether it was a malfunction or an operator error. "We're still investigating all the different things. We're investigating the door, the ramp, and the audible system," said Mary Fetsch, a TriMet spokesperson. You'll see in the surveillance video that Bailey was reunited with his son after a tense and frightening 7 minutes. Aiden was safe and he's learned a very valuable lesson. "You going to push another button again?" Bailey asked of his son, Aiden, who shook his head no. This all happened on one of TriMet's Type 4 Max trains, the newest in their fleet. The Somali pirates have demanded $7 million for Paul and Rachel Chandler, taken from the 38-foot Lynn Rival just days after the couple set sail from the Seychelles islands for Tanzania. "Our kidnappers are losing patience," said Paul Chandler, 59. "They are concerned that there has been no response at all to their demands for money." As Chandler spoke during the two-minute video, he was surrounded by armed men pointing their weapons at him. "We are also concerned that these people will lose patience and will not feed us -- and I have no doubt that they will not hesitate to kill us, perhaps within a week or so of now if there is no response," he said. "So, please somebody get in touch. Otherwise we just sleepwalk to a tragic ending." It wasn't clear if the Chandlers were speaking on their own or delivering scripted statements. So far, the British government has refused to pay the ransom demand or negotiate with the pirates, who are reportedly holding the Chandlers somewhere in Somalia. "The government will not make substantive concessions for hostage takers, including the payments of ransom," according to the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office's official statement. The government called the Chandler's innocent tourists and demanded their immediate release. The video is the first time the Chandlers have been seen since their abduction, although they have previously been allowed to speak with Rachel Chandler's brother, Stephen Collett. Both Chandlers said they were in good health, but feared their captors would not hesitate to kill them. "We are very concerned about the future," said Rachel Chandler, 55. "Our captors are very impatient that nobody has been in touch about negotiations. We ask the government and the people of Britain and our families to do whatever you can to at least open negotiations with these people about money so that perhaps our lives can be bought back." Pirates have been very active off the east coast of Africa in the past several years, operating out of lawless Somalia. Two vessels were attacked the day after the Chandlers set sail. One of them, a cargo ship, was successfully boarded and seized off the Seychelles, while the other fought off its attackers near the Kenyan coast. Courtroom video recorded the October 19 incident during the sentencing of an inmate. In the video, you can see Detention Officer Adam Stoddard walk up behind the public defender and touch her paperwork. About 30 seconds later, Stoddard calls another officer over and takes a piece of paper. You can hear the public defender, Joanne Cuccia, say in confusion, "would you excuse me for a moment?" That's when Cuccia starts defending herself saying all of the paperwork she got from her client was through jail mail. "I want to know what they took and what's going on," Cuccia says. Several times, you can hear the judge asking what happened. "But you don't get to do that," Cuccia says. Stoddard now has until November 30 to comply with a judge's orders. He is required to report to jail on December 1 unless the conditions set by the judge are met. Those conditions are: 1) On or before November 30th, 2009, at a time convenient for Ms. Cuccia, a news conference to take place in the plaza on the north side of the central court building where he is to give Ms. Cuccia a sincere verbal and written apology for invading her defense file and for the damage that his conduct may have caused to her professional reputation. 2) If at the news conference, Ms. Cuccia does not state that the apology is sufficient, Stoddard will report to the jail on December 1, 2009 and be detained until further order upon a finding that he has complied with the purge clause. "My officer was doing his job and I will not stand by and allow him to be thrown to the wolves by the courts because they feel pressure from the media on this situation." "If judge Donahoe wants to have a press conference, your honor knock yourself out, but you can't order someone else to do it." Earlier this month, Stoddard explained to a judge why he took the document. The deputy said four key words on the paperwork made him decide to take it and make copies. He said the words were 'going to,' 'steal' and 'money.' The deputy also said he decided to take the paperwork because he hadn't had a chance to search it before the trial. In a written statement, MCSO officials earlier said their officers have the right to search for contraband. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board on Tuesday released the video and its preliminary findings of what led to the November 4th blast at the Silver Eagle Refinery in Woods Cross. The blast damaged 10 homes but caused no serious injuries. On Friday, board Chairman John Bresland recommended that the plant shut down as quickly as possible. He says investigators in recent days developed serious concerns about the plant's equipment. He says the plant could be restarted once any needed repairs are made and investigators can determine it's safe to reopen. Silver Eagle confirmed it agreed to the shutdown. Investigators haven't made a final determination on what caused the blast. Preliminary findings indicate that the explosion happened when a 10-inch (25,4 centimetres) pipe failed catastrophically. On January 12th, four people were seriously burned at Silver Eagle when a 440,000 gallon (1,665,581.2 litres) storage tank caught fire and burned for 11 hours. By ABBY SIMONS, Star Tribune Last update: November 19, 2009 - 12:22 AM St. Paul police have arrested an adult and a juvenile in connection with a series of random attacks in Minneapolis and St. Paul that were recorded on video and posted on YouTube. A 19-year-old was booked into the Ramsey County jail, and a 17-year-old was taken to a juvenile detention center. Both were booked Tuesday on suspicion of strong-arm robbery and aggravated assault, according to St. Paul police reports. St. Paul Police Sgt. Paul Schnell said police were searching for two others who were recorded on camera participating in the assaults, while the remaining others -- at least four -- would be considered persons of interest. "From what we have seen in the footage, there were only four people that we can connect with possible criminal activity in the city of St. Paul that were clearly and directly involved in the planning and/or execution of these attacks," Schnell said. He said that a handful of victims have come forward, and about four reports were filed as of late Wednesday afternoon. One victim told police he was tackled from behind by an unknown male at 6 p.m. Saturday while walking east on Grand Avenue near Avon Street in St. Paul. "Assault was probably posted on YouTube," the police report said. The investigation and arrests followed the Monday posting of a YouTube video featuring eight young males terrorizing bicyclists and pedestrians -- including children and older people -- in what appeared to be Minneapolis and St. Paul. Edited and set to music, the video shows the group of what appear to be teenagers or young men taking turns saying, "Watch this," before knocking down victims and running away, laughing. The video was removed by midday Tuesday. The video made its way around several online message boards and was soon e-mailed to police and media. The perpetrators prominently showed their faces and gave what were purported to be their real names and nicknames. "We certainly would love to talk to people who may have witnessed things in different areas," Schnell said.
