      hi. do u know what your 'cuban democracy act' and the ongoing sanctions/embargoes have done? i have a feeling u really don't:
      illegal to transfer funds from families in america to families in cuba - almost as many cubans in america as there are in cuba itself (this in itself could double a family's income, like it does when americans send money back home to their 'old countries'); 6month ban of any nations' ships to enter the american harbours if they been anywhere near cuba; sanctions against companies doing business with cuba even though under the jurisdiction of a third state;
      did u know that it's illegal for a plane carrying canadian citizens to have an emergency landing in america if need be if it's flying back to canada from cuba? total nonsense. and yes, i was once on a plane that had to stop half way and fly back to bahamas because the plane wasn't allowed to land in the states!
      basically the sanctions have been an undeclared act of war. america has bent over backwards to stifle any post-revolution economic stimulus in cuba by making other countries scared to have trade........... i.e., if mexico ships goods to the states, it has to declare that no cuban sugar was used.
      oh come on, start reading foreign newspapers and get a real glimpse of what kind of government you have. but then of course, i guess u don't know any better if you've only been exposed to your government's propaganda all your life."
      Perky, you still didn't answer my original questions...

      Why couldn't that small Island Nation sustain a higher quality of life for its citizens by doing business with the other 193 nations on earth and those 6.4 billion non U.S. citizens?

      How come Castro's communist partner nations couldn't help him to become a powerful nation state?

      If Mexico ships goods to the U.S. it must not include any Cuban Sugar??? WOW that is BRUTAL...

      How can Mexico even afford to do business with us with those type of rules????

      How can we (the U.S.) be so unfair???

      Sanctions = Undeclared war?

      Geez, I guess we were at war with South Africa for over 20 years then prior to the end of Apartheid.

      Castro got what he deserved when he STOLE (Nationalized) all of the U.S. property when he took power.

      By the way, I speak 4 languages, and read not only foreign press but watch foreign news ever week.

      BTW my "governments propoganda" as you called it, makes a lot more sense than some of the stuff you've just written.

      I do watch Canadian News whenever I want to get updated on Hockey rules and the plight of the Northern Elk.

      Also if I can't sleep - a rousing bit of Canadian Parliament has me snoozing in minutes...

      God Save the Queen!

      actually, i did answer the question. you've asked a circuitous question. when you posed the question why didn't cuba just go about doing business with anybody else ..... i've spelled it out for you: any economic stimulus cuba has sought out has been dampened/stifled under threats to OTHER nations doing business with them. got it yet?

    • I see it differently Perky, I see a dictatorship that has stifled opposition, killed dissidents and imprisoned the entire nation. The USSR gave billions and billions in free aid and still Cuba was a basket case. The only sanctions or embargo that really matter are the ones imposed by the dictatorship to their people.

      so funny. people support the sanctions on cuba, yet turn blind eye to china, vietnam etc.

      You're telling me that the old USSR, China, The entire EU, Most Latin American countries and African nations were / are afraid of what would happen if we stopped dealing with them... over Cuban sanctions...

      I'm saying that NONE of those countries care about our possible economic t More..

      economics of size. china has 22% of the world's population. soviet had they own satellite nations under their control. u compare cuba to china? hehee.
      anyway, nobody got reparations after ww2 when countries got carved up in europe, so don't hold your breath if/when cuba changes.
