Former IDF general: PKK not a terror group; PM Netanyhu in response: Israel consider PKK terrorist organization

Former IDF deputy chief of staff Maj.-Gen. Yair Golan told a research panel in Washington DC yesterday he does not consider the Kurdish resistance movement PKK a terrorist organization, despite the fact that it appears on the US’s list of terror groups. "In my personal opinion, the PKK is not a terrorist organization," said Golan. Several hours later Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stepped in to refute his claim and said Israel backs Kurdish independence, but considers the Kurdish insurgent group the PKK a terror organization. “Israel opposes the PKK and considers it a terrorist organization, in contrast to Turkey, which supports the terrorist group Hamas,” Netanyahu said while on a state visit to Argentina. “While Israel is opposed to any kind of terrorism, it supports the legitimate means of the Kurdish people to obtain their own state.”
