One Dead, 13 Injured in Rare Southern California Lightning Storm

A 20-year-old man was killed and thirteen people were injured after being struck by lightning on Venice Beach in Los Angeles during a bout of freak July thunderstorms on Sunday, CBS Los Angeles reports.

Paramedics were dispatched to Ocean Front Walk on Venice Beach around 2:15 p.m after witnesses reported a tremendous crash of thunder.

“I heard this crackle,” a witness told CBS Los Angeles, “And there was this giant bolt of lightning shooting across the sky and the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard.”

A swimmer who was initially missing in the water was recovered by lifeguards in full cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at Marina Del Rey Hospital. A surfer was in critical condition and eight more people were hospitalized. Four people were treated at the scene and released, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Photos on social media revealed a chaotic scene with numerous emergency vehicles and several patients being treated on the beach by paramedics.
