Lebanese army detains defecting Syrian officer

BEIRUT - The Lebanese army
detained a defecting Alawite Syrian officer as he was trying to flee to
Lebanon through the Al-Arida crossing in North Lebanon, Kuwaiti
newspaper Al-Anbaa reported.

The officer had served as a major in the Syrian army’s Fourth Armored Division headed by Maher al-Assad, the report said.

He crossed the border wearing civilian clothes and holding a fake identity card, Al-Anbaa added.
