Cockpit of small plane destroyed after fire at Salt Lake Airport (raw footage)

oct 3 2007 West Jordan
A small plane caught fire at Salt Lake Airport No. 2 in West Jordan today. The cockpit was destroyed, but the pilot was able to get out safely.

The incident happened about 11:30 a.m. A pilot was doing some maintenance on a plane that he used for flight instruction, said West Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Rodger Broome. The man then drove the plane onto the taxi-way but did not have plans to fly, he said.

While on the runway, the pilot smelled smoke coming from the dashboard, Broome said. The pilot got out and found flames shooting from the undercarriage.

The fire was put out quickly once crews arrived, but it burned so fast that the cockpit was destroyed, causing about $60,000 damage. The wings and tail remained. The pilot was not injured.

The National Transportation Safety Administration likely will investigate the cause of the fire, Broome said.
