An underground water pipe in Kyiv, Ukraine has burst with such tremendous force that it created a "mushroom asphalt" explosion that destroyed cars and rocketed muddy water 6 storeys high.

Video recorded on neighbourhood security camera shows a huge bubble of earth rupturing and blowing apart, similar to a battlefield IED.

The explosion was caused by hydraulic testing on pipes that were installed in 1979.

City officials have confirmed that compensation will be paid to affected residents.
