China launches 1st lunar probe

Oct. 24 - China re-enters the space race as it launches the country's first moon orbiter into space.

Officials say the Chang'e One orbiter will circle the moon for over a year, mapping and analysing its surface.

Beijing plans to follow the orbiter mission with a moon rover mission, probably in 2012.

Chang'e One is named after a mythical Chinese goddess who flew to the moon.
