Family release neighbor video of fatal July shooting

How many shots did you count ? The family of John Berry, a 29-year-old man killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in Lakewood, CA, have released video footage of the fatal shooting.

Berry reportedly failed to take medication for an undisclosed condition. Los Angeles County Sheriffs were responding to a call about a man “acting strangely”.

“When deputies got here, the suspect actually drove in the direction of one of the deputies and collided with the first deputy that arrived,” Homicide Lt. Eddie Hernandez told reporters.
Deputies used different levels of non-lethal force attempting to subdue him, “However, at one point the suspect crushed a deputy between his car and one of the radio cars,” Hernandez said. “The deputy’s legs were crushed. Fearing for the deputy’s safety, deputies opened fire and struck the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department into this incident is ongoing. We are in possession of a video filmed by a witness and it is included in the investigation. The video, while it shows only a portion of the incident, is consistent with other information developed during the investigation.
The incident began when deputies responded to a call of a person acting erratically. As deputies arrived, the suspect drove his vehicle head on into a responding sheriff’s patrol car. As deputies attempted to remove the suspect from his vehicle, he continued his attempts to operate the vehicle, placing at least one deputy’s life in immediate danger. That is when the shooting occurred.
Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and it results in the fatality of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney and Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner – Coroner, in addition to investigations by Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Office of the Inspector General is also present. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee.
