I am no expert Sir yet maybe they got caught while in middle of the road or turning back wasn't an option. Maybe they were fleeing a much worse fire and had no choice but to forge ahead. Maybe they panicked. Maybe the wind suddenly changed? So many maybes. RIT.

All of the above. Fire was traveling so fast above the trees because of the strong wind and dry conditions that they found themselves suddenly surrounded by it from all directions. Thick smoke, unbearable heat, trees and embers crashing down on them, zero visibility with cars crashing into the back of each other and blocking the road, people disoriented and in a panic.

Some died in their cars, others abandoned them trying to escape on foot, only to die shortly after.

  • What's weird here is ...fire in a London tower block (approx 70 dead) = Global TV coverage, forest fires in Portugal (67 dead) = barely a mention.

    • @peskywinnets// News gravitate towards current hot topics(muslim) and the other is blame. If nature caused the fire then theres not much anyone can blame.

No blackout about Portugal but you know fire isn't reserved to you unfortunately, news reports were about our own local fires mostly.

Your news barely mentioned it, other peoples news was dominated by it, and for others it was one line of thousands wanting attention.

As for TV coverage a skyscraper in a large modern city going Roman Candle will always trump a forest fire. Particularly if that city claims to be advanced and modern as it shows most clearly there is corruption at more than one level.

    • @SomeTosser Our body will meet death in one way or another. Not much pain is felt in these extreme circumstances. Something not talked about though is a variety of "conditions" maintained by medical procedures that is bordering torture, but maintained due to ethics. http://www.radiolab.org/story/262588-bitter-end/

Well I have been burned on my right side, 3rd degree from my hip to under my arm. I basically had one layer of skin left. I required extensive skin graft surgery.

I can tell with some certainty that been burnt does indeed hurt. A lot.

But yes I agree that some medical procedures are just plain cruel with no real benefit.

    • @SomeTosser I can imagine, but that's afterwards. I remember reading sometime that the oxygen is consumed by such an intense fire so probably they lost conciousness before they got burned. i googled if the lack of oxygen could stall the engines as well but it's more likely that the air intake gets clogged with ash and smoke. How did you get the injury?

Playing with matches as a child. 3 months in hospital and then 18 months wearing a pressure suit.

Not sure on the oxygen (possible) but I imagine the smoke could kill you before being burned.

  • Just too Smokey to see through to the way out to the end of the roadway. What a shame. Horrible way to die for ordinary folks just going about their business.

    Great drone video. Voted.

  • I wonder how many were people panicking and driving without knowing where they were going (as in which way was safe). People who think cars can drive through a wall of fire watch too many movies. Too bad this happened. I think this gives some perspective on how well officials did in the Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada wildfire last year, when they had to evacuate 88,000 people away from fires like this (or worse). And no one was killed by the fire and only two in traffic accidents (which was pro More..

Giving credit where credit is due. In the last few weeks there have been some news reports critical of the fire officials in Fort McMurray. People trying to justify their roles as naysayers. As terrible as the situation in Portugal is, it provides some great contrast and a fuck you to those people slagging the Fort Mac emergency personnel (MNP Consulting). It's why I mentioned it.

I was working in Edmonton the end of last year and some of my colleagues at the time had been in Fort Mac during the fires. A few teared up talking about it, I can't imagine at all. That was some insane shit.

  • Would be nice if a system could be created that would allow people to see where they are in relation to a fire, even if the satellite map only updated once a minute. The problem with forest fires is that it's really hard to know which direction to run towards because you don't have a bird's eye view of the surroundings.
