Women Beaten for Not Wearing Burqa

Before the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, the burqa was infrequently worn in cities. During the Taliban's reign, women were required to wear a burqa whenever they appeared in public.

Officially, it is not required under the present Afghan regime, but local warlords still enforce it outside Kabul. Due to political instability in these areas, women who might not otherwise be inclined to wear the burqa must do so as matter of personal safety.
