State Pays $3M To Settle Lawsuit In Fatal Shooting Case

Santa Fe, NM - State government agreed to a $3 million settlement payment to the family of a woman shot and killed by a State Police officer in Santa Fe more than three years ago to avoid a wrongful death suit.

State Police Officer Oliver Wilson shot and killed 39-year-old Jeanette Anaya around 1 a.m. Nov. 7, 2013, after Wilson tried to pull her over for what the officer contended was a questionable turn onto St. Francis Drive, although his dash-cam camera didn’t show any obviously erratic driving when it was made public.

  • Before I watch this, as to the description- I only watched a few seconds so far and I can see that she is hauling ass to escape a high speed chase. At that point, why would I, or anyone, give a damn about whether she made a questionable turn prior to this? She's racking up violations every 5 seconds. You might mention cause for pulling her over, did he really have it? I still don't give a fuck. As far as I'm concerned you pull over when you're pulled over, or you are a criminal.

  • If cops cared about public safety they wouldn't pursue someone through city roads. Most departments have no pursuit rules for non-violent offenses for a reason. More harm comes from a pursuit than using the dash cam to catch the person later after you let them get away and slow down in driving.

Are you illiterate? I said for non-violent offenses. If a cop tries to pull someone over for a broken tail light and the person panics (lets say a dumb poorly raised hoodlum) then yes... the cop shouldn't pursue them through busy roads. Just use the dash cam and investigative abilities to catch the person later. Or, you know, let him get away and the state loses a $50 fine and the cop doesnt get his adrenaline.
