Italy: Clashes erupt as protesters rail against G7 summit in Lucca

Clashes broke out between riot police and protesters as hundreds of activists rallied through the streets of Lucca, Monday, to demonstrate against the G7 foreign minister summit being held in the Italian city.

Protesters carried a banner reading "Against G7" as they marched through the city where foreign ministers from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, the UK and the US are meeting for a two-day summit.

The summit is expected to be focused on the recent alleged chemical attack in Syria and the consequent US retaliation.

The US hit Syrian Shayrat Airbase with a Tomahawk missile strike on Friday morning. Trump said the attack was a direct response to Tuesday's alleged chemical weapons attack in Khan Sheikhoun near Idlib for which he holds Syrian President Bashar al-Assad responsible.

Foreign ministers are also expected to discuss North Korea's plans for nuclear and missile weapons programmes, alongside the situation in Iraq.
