LOGANSPORT, Ind. -- Authorites said four special needs students were killed Friday afternoon when a dump truck clipped a school bus, causing it to collide with another dump truck near a rural intersection in northern Indiana.

The collision happened near Logansport, Ind., about 70 miles north of Indianapolis, just after 3 p.m., local station WRTV reported.

Cass County Coroner Gene Powlen confirmed the four deaths, and law enforcement officials on the scene said some of the victims were students who were aboard the bus.

"The victims are everywhere," Powlen said.

The Logansport Pharos-Tribune said the bus belonged to the Twin Lakes School Corp. in Monticello and was carrying special needs students. Calls to the school district were not immediately returned.

The Pharos-Tribune said the driver of the school bus was the only survivor on the bus and was flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. It said the two dump truck drivers were not injured.

The newspaper reported that the accident occurred when a dump truck tried to slow for a vehicle making a turn. The truck was unable to stop and swerved into the westbound lane, clipping the school bus. The bus flipped onto its side and slid into oncoming traffic, where a second truck struck the roof, causing the bus to slide into a ditch on the south side of the road.

Television video from the crash scene showed the bus upright, its roof crushed.
