Aleppo’s Great Mosque Destroyed

Following a standard operating procedure of using mosques and other places of worship as bases, the Umayyad mosque in Aleppo was the scene of fierce fighting today. The minaret of the large mosque collapsed as dozens of armed militants were held up, using the mosque as an operating base for attacks against government forces in the city. Unable to succeed in gaining or holding ground, armed groups usually entrench themselves in heavily built up areas, driving terrified civilians from their homes and inviting reaction from the Syrian army. Using the cover of intact or damaged buildings, militants use sniper rifles and anti-tank weaponry in an effort to target Syrian army units.
