LAPD defends fatal shooting of unarmed naked man

Community leaders question the use of deadly force, but the department says the former college football player was punching officers and trying to take their guns when one officer shot him.

The Los Angeles Police Department on Saturday said that two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a former college football player in Playa Vista were "fighting for their lives" in the moments before one of them discharged his weapon.

The statement about the shooting of Reginald Doucet Jr., who was unarmed and naked when he encountered police Friday morning, came as a prominent civil rights activist questioned why officers couldn't have used non-lethal means to subdue him and called on LAPD Chief Charlie Beck to review the department's training and tactics in dealing with unarmed suspects.

"Is it always going to be a situation where you're going to use deadly force? Because if so, that

  • Easy solution. Never fight a cop in the first place.

  • Here's an unarmed man too. Every police call is a man with a gun call.

^^^This was an average size kid that took the chief's gun and killed him.

Now why don't one of you go get in a fight with 200 pound college athlete and tell me if you felt like your life was in danger as he is pounding the consciousness out of you. Police agencies don't hire ninjas, they hire physically average people with average fig More..

    • Unless that 200 pound athlete had a gun the police themselves would never recognize another citizens life was endangered and was justified to shoot him. It's a huge double standard between what defines police defending themselves and what defines a citizen defending themselves.

    • Perhaps the officers did not have one. Not all officers and or departments have them.

    • He tried to grab the officer's gun. You don't defend a lethal threat with non lethal force. You miss with the taser or it doesn't work, now you have a suspect with a gun and a disarmed officer and another officer with a taser in his hand instead of a gun.

    • twist words much? I clearly states the cops isolated him, not the other way around.
Anytime you pin anyone the fight or flight instinct takes over, thats a well known fact even to the donut eaters, and since flight isn't possible guess what.
As far as going for the cops gun, thats getting cliche as hell and is used by them all the time. Maybe, just maybe, if your that damn close and allowing someone to do that you need more training on how to handle situations.

  • I have no special love for the police, and certainly don't want to live in a police state.
But i distrust the scumbags they deal with a whole lot less.

When in doubt, i will believe a cop 99 times out of 100 over the word of scumbags they have to deal with.

  • Heap of BS.

It sounds like there were multiple officers, versus one naked suspect. Hypothetical resolution: Officer one says to officer two, "Here, hold my gun, I won't need it, but I don't want him to get at it. If he beats me, blow him away." Officer one then moves in to arrest naked suspect with non-lethal compliance measures, while avoiding exposing his firearm to a naked suspect possibly looking to start a fight. Now suspect knows that if he attempts to fight officer one, and eve More..
