Nancy Pelosi rallies workers against shutdown

Public workers angry over the ongoing government shutdown took to the streets of Washington, D.C. on Thursday, demanding that the Senate resolve the budget crisis on a day of heavy rain. Among the figures present included House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Reverend Jesse Jackson and CNN Crossfire host Van Jones.

Speaking at the rally, Senator Pelosi said: "We, the Democrats in the House of Representatives, have been willing... Have been willing to give them 200 votes to open up government. Give us the vote."

The protest began around 11 a.m. local time (1500 GMT) in Washington's Upper Senate Park near the Capitol. It was organised by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the largest federal employee union representing 600,000 federal government workers nationwide and overseas.
