Iran: Pro-government rallies held to protest violence

Thousands of Iranian citizens rallied through several of Iran's major cities in support of the government on Wednesday.

Supporters were seen holding their national flag in the cities of Qom, Bushehr and Arak, as they made their way through central streets, pumping their fists in the air in support of the government. State TV said the marchers were demonstrating against violence seen during recent demonstrations.

At least 21 people have died in anti-government protests that have taken place since Thursday, with rallies against rising food prices, unemployment and alleged corruption.

President Hassan Rouhani has acknowledged the public's anger over Iran's flagging economy, though he and other officials have warned that the government would not hesitate to crack down on those it considers lawbreakers.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also blamed recent riots on meddling by the "enemies of Iran."
