Dashcam video shows deputy-involved shooting in Dollar General parking lot

Carroll County, GA - Police dash camera video shows a deputy-involved shooting in Carroll County.

Deputy Tyler North, 26, was on patrol just after 3 a.m. Monday when he approached a car sitting in a Dollar General parking lot along Highway 166.

Investigators said Joshua Mapson, 22, was asleep inside.

"He seemed very startled. He woke up. He reached for a set of car keys. He (North) thought the gentleman may have been going to roll down the window as he put the ignition on," attorney Mac Pilgrim said.

Pilgrim said his client identified himself as a deputy when he went up to the car. Dash camera video shows the driver backing up and trying to drive off.

"He (North) felt as if his life was threatened," Pilgrim said. "His vehicle is a 2,000 pound weapon."

North fired approximately seven rounds, hitting Mapson in the hand, according to authorities.

  • He felt threatened as he stepped in the way to feel threatened.

      Let's analyze the alternatives.
He could step aside and say have a nice day, goodbye. Enforcement of laws is difficult when you just let criminals go.

He could step aside and then pursue him in his car, which would mean that every one of these cases would turn into a high speed pursuit and we know those more frequently end up with a dead civilian than a dead criminal.

He could stay in front of the car and refuse to let the criminal leave. This would give the criminal the op More..

Option 4 : Given that he was asleep in the car and had the keys, it would be safe to assume it was his car.
So the officer could have take down the registration number and caught up with him at a later date.

  • I could wery well be wrong here but in most of the "officer involved shooting" videos posted here on LL, the cops are usually in the 20-35 year old range. It is the same in our country (minus the shootings). The young cops are the most arrogant ones & prone to having a God complex.

This cop was not in danger of being run over. He just wanted to pop someone.

    • @BuBBle.D it's not that they are young and arrogant or a god complex.. it's just that they are young and their training is still fresh, their activity level is high, and more responsive/reactive. Unlike a cop who's been on the job for decades and can stopped caring, or hasn't exercised or hit the gym in years, and getting rusty in response/reaction time.

What you said is true for some but i was talking about something different. I was saying/meant, that young cops (of course not every young cop) are more likely to shoot than older ones. They will rather shoot their way out, than try to get control over the situation by calming the situation/using the taser - basically by non-lethal means.

I remember when i was a 15-17 year old little fucker and almost every time we hung out in the park, the young/new cops would come by and More..

  • The car is not trying to hit you.. no one is firing at you. No one is coming at you with a weapon. No lethal force is coming your way yet you're using leathal force. In some states the people can't even shoot an intruder with leathol force. Charge the asshole. Fuck him. I get cops have to deal with a bunch of bullshit but above the law bullshit don't fly.

  • Ummmmmm, the uniformed buffoon didn't start shooting until the front of the car was clear of him..No chance the driver could have hit him at that point.
Clear cut case of Cop Buffoonery.Someone should take his little pop gun away immediately.

    • @Carcass So criminals should just be let to go on their merry way if they aren't immediately in position to kill someone? Please explain this to me, should he have ensued with a 5 hour police chase with risk or innocent life? Please inform us how we should treat criminals with baby gloves

    • @sumnayin

      why is he a criminal?

cop could have startled him somehow (like maybe he woke him up by banging on the window, pointing a flashlight or a gun at the guy, or screaming at the guy)

  • Another bullshit shooting by the gestapo police in the USA. The guy was sound asleep and thought someone was trying to rob him at 3 AM, so he fled. That does not warrant a death sentence.

  • sleeping can now be a fatal offense. cops need a little more judgment on when someone is ACTUALLY TRYING to hurt them with a car..or simply trying to drive away. just like i cant shoot someone running AWAY. neither should cops.

  • he couldn't fire more than seven rounds ? Nice fucking "law enforcement" you got when a fucking cop can kill you for simply driving away from him. If the US could somehow totally fucking annihilate liberal California, they might have a fighting chance. because those fuckers want to take all of the guns. But seriously quit letting your fucking cops execute people.

  • I'm not buying this one. The victim, who was treated and released to police, was attempting to flee. The officer clearly walked toward the fleeing car then casually stepped to the driver's side of Mapson's vehicle. In no way does it look like Mapson was trying to threaten or harm Deputy North. Mapson's crimes? He was booked for loitering and reckless conduct (misdemeanors). Deputy North could have taken this man's life for freaking loitering? Can't support big blue in this situation.

  • Murder case plain and simple... just because a person doesn't stop for a cop is no reason to shoot them. If this person was a known muder suspect then it's obviously justified...but just because the cop sees you sitting in a parking lot and you attempt to drive away??? It's murder plain and simple.

It's no surprise people try to get away from the cops; if they don't out right murder you, they'll plant drugs on you and commit perjury to get a conviction.
