Ukrainian government on Thursday adopted a law on the legal status and honoring the memory of fighters for Ukrainian independence in the 20th century (No. 2538-1), authored by Yuriy-Bogdan Shukhevych.

A total of 271 of the 327 deputies registered in the session hall voted for the bill.

According to the law, the struggle for Ukrainian independence in the XX century was conducted from October 1917 to August 24, 1991, and the fighters for Ukraine's independence were recognized as belonging to numerous military, political and other organizations, including the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the troops of the Ukrainian National Republic and Western Ukrainian National Republic.

The law stipulates that the state may provide social guarantees, benefits or other payments to fighters for Ukrainian independence in the 20th century. Local governments can, using funds from local budgets, provide them with additional social guarantees, benefits or other payments.

The state should recognize state and military awards (insignia) and the military ranks of fighters for Ukrainian independence in the 20th century that were obtained by the participants of the fight against the authorities, organizations, agencies or units that are specified in the bill.

Citizens of Ukraine, foreigners and stateless persons who publicly manifest disregard for persons who are recognized by the law, "preventing the exercising of the rights of the fighters for the independence of Ukraine in the 20th century, bear responsibility in accordance with the current legislation of Ukraine."

"The public denial of the legitimacy of the struggle for the independence of Ukraine in the 20th century is recognized as outrage against the memory of the fighters for the independence of Ukraine in the 20th century, and the dignity of the Ukrainian people, and is unlawful," the law states.
