11/19/2007 Berkeley, Virginia
President Bush visited central Virginia today for an early celebration of Thanksgiving.
this afternoon at Virginia's Berkeley Plantation ? that stakes a claim to the first Thanksgiving -- Bush reflected on everyday heroism and the nation's giving spirit.

The events allowed Bush to publicly thank people for acts of compassion and decency. Aides say it is part of the job he truly enjoys.

White House communications director Kevin Sullivan says that in times of tragedy and celebration this year, Bush has been inspired by the character of the American people.
So the president used the occasion to pay tribute to them and encourage Americans to give back to their communities.

Berkely is where historians say English settlers held a Thanksgiving service almost two years before the Pilgrims' feast in Massachusetts that came to be considered the first Thanksgiving.
