Yemen: Sanaa awakens to destruction after heavy airstrikes

Residents of Sanaa inspected the aftermath from heavy Saudi-led airstrikes on Wednesday morning.

Footage shows bombed-out cars and damage to buildings in the Hada district, the capital’s diplomatic quarter, and close to the residence of the late former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Saudi-led coalition launched the aerial attack on the Yemeni capital in apparent retaliation for the assassination of Saleh by Houthi rebels on Monday.

Houthi rebels accused Saleh of betrayal after he offered to negotiate a way out of the conflict with Saudi Arabia.

The former president’s General People’s Congress Party announced he was killed in a roadside attack on Monday. In an interview in Riyadh, his son vowed to avenge his death.

The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing since 2015. According to the UN, the civil war has claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people.
