Irish PM 'surprised and disappointed' after no deal on Brexit border talks

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said he was "suprised and disappointed" in the UK government on Monday after Brexit talks on the Irish border fell short of a deal. Varadkar's statement came after Prime Minister Theresa May and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker held talks in Brussels.

"The Irish negotiating team received confirmation from the British government and the [Michel] Barnier task force that the United Kingdom had agreed a text on the border that met our concerns," said Varadkar, adding that it would have given Ireland's stamp of approval to move on to Phase II.

"I am surprised and disappointed that the British govenrment now appears not to be in a position to conclude what was agreed today," said Varadkar.

"I acknowledge that she is negotiating in good faith. But my position, and that of the Irish government, is unequivocal ... We cannot agree to [move on to Phase II] unless we have firm guarantees that there will not be a hard border in Ireland under any circumstances," he said.

  • More pro EU bullshit from EUrine news.

This minute border between the sinister EU and the sovereign UK is so easy to solve.

Just fucking leave it as it is.

But no, the EU are cunts and are pretending it's difficult.

It is very easy and best possible deal for everyone. EU proposed to make Nothern Irland a special zone that would still be under some EU laws (free movement and free trade laws but without free move to laws). That would keep thesame border as there is today, or better said lack of it. The main controll would be when someone tries to go from Nothern Irland to the rest of UK. This would benefit UK sence a part of it would be indirectly in the EU and they can shipp their goods thru NI More..

      Yeah keep telling yourself that.

The EU and the EU alone are responsible for this hard line fuck up.

The DUP have a say in Ireland, they're Irish.

The EU are beauracrats from Brussells that couldn't give a flying fuck about Ireland, the Irish people or its borders before Brexit.

      Fuck the EU.

    • @stick_in_the_eye They can't delay Brexit. We gave notice and two years after that, the EU treaties will no longer apply in/to the UK. An extension of the notice period is theoretically possible but it would require the unanimous support of UK and EU27 governments - and that is not going to happen.

You won't get that anywhere else as they are a very special circumstance. NI could be the UK-EU bridge; think what that means for NI!!!! NI getting that treatment won't leave EITHER unions.

    • @COYBIG There will be no second vote, Article 50 has been invoked and we will leave at the end of the two year notice period, in March 2019. If there is any vote, it would be on a Brexit trade deal. There is unlikely to be a referendum on this, more likely a parliamentary vote. Because of the multiple opinions about the nature of a Brexit trade deal, such a vote will likely reject whatever has been negotiated with the EU and we will leave with no deal i.e. a hard Brexit.

  • There is already a border, a free flowing border, it has existed before the EU. You didn't need a passport to travel between Ireland and the UK and there are some regulatory checks already in place, just extend these slightly to cover what we already have, have an open dialogue group who can then look to implement any future changes. Problem solved.

    • @dain_bramaged

That was fine prior to the EU. The south effectively have open borders so you have three choices

      1. Hard border at UK mainland. The N.Irish don't want that as this will marginise them.
      2. Hard border between North and South.
      3. Hard border between Ireland and EU. This is not going to happen.

So there is logically speaking really only option 2.

    • @dain_bramaged Yes, the Common Travel Area. It continued because Ireland and the UK joined the EU at the same time.

The DUP will bring down May's government if she attempted option 1.

Option 2 is the tricky option that nobody really wants but is the default if no compromise is found.

The EU could allow option 3 (they have had similar special border arrangements elsewhere). As Ireland is More..

    • @jg-

Option 3 will involve buy-in from both the EU and Ireland. I doubt this can happen given the lack of compromise exhibited particularly by the EU. It probably makes the most sense but commonsense and the EU are not synonomous

  • "Irish PM 'surprised and disappointed' after no deal on Brexit border talks"

So, he was unaware that the DUP support the Conservative coalition and that one part of the DUP price for their support was the widely publicised demand that Northern Ireland would not be in any way separated from the rest of the UK in
any Brexit deal. Is he some kind of idiot?

    • @zindo no, the IRA was bombing northern ireland.. nortehrn ireland want to stay in the uk. always has.. 100 years ago when ireland left the uk, it did so as a whole, northern left the irish state and rejoined the uk.. the irish republic claimed the north until the good Friday agreement was last in 1999. that was when they stopped planting bombs in the north. the republic also supported Germany in both world wars.

The UN are also defunct, having the UK on any permeant seat is historical nonsense. When England was asked to supply planes to help push back ISIS, when they were trying to exterminate the yazidi they could o More..
