Wal-Mart pre-opening gala gets community, labor protest 

On the 3ed of December, Wal-Mart held a "Grand Opening Preview" for
invited VIP's at their 99 H st NE location. There were more protesters
outside the store than VIPs waiting to be admitted.
There were security guards and even a cop to make sure nobody but the
VIPs and invited guests got inside, and a number of mainstream reporters
were excluded.

Wal-Mart is starting their workers at $9.25 an hour. This is for a store
that demands 24-7 short notice availability, drug testing, and is
notorious for difficult working conditions. So many people quit or are
fired that on average a Wal-Mart job lasts only about three months.

Before breaking ground on their construction sites, they were promising
to start workers at between $11 an hour and $12 an hour. This was 25%
more than they are actually paying. I wonder what other promises
